K’taka files petition in SC; says cannot release water till December end
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Monday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a modification of its order issued on September 20 directing the release of 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
The state government in its petition explained that they were not in any position to release more water as Karnataka was facing shortage in the reservoirs under the Cauvery basin. The petition further stated that the 42,000 cusecs of water had to be treated as ’arrears’ and could be released only by the end of December.
The petition also stressed on the resolution passed by both the Houses of the Legislature on September 23 that water from the reservoirs in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka would be used only for drinking purpose and not for anything else.
The Supervisory Committee headed by Union Water Resources Secretary Shashi Shekhar had directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs water from September 21 to 30 but the Apex Court later directed the state to release 6,000 cusecs water till September 27.
