Uppinangady: An unidentified gang robbed Rs 7 lakh cash and four cell phones from a container lorry transporting fish during the wee hours of Thursday near Shiradi border on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway.

The incident took place when the container lorry was returning to Gangolli from Chennai after delivering fish. A black Innova which followed the lorry from Shiradi Ghat overtook the lorry and stopped in front of it at an isolated area at around 2.20 am.

Three robbers from the car took the control of the lorry after threatening driver Vignesh, cleaner Thabraz, Chethan and Arun. One of the three robbers then began driving the lorry for about half an hour between Gundya and Shiradi. Meanwhile, the original occupants of the lorry, fearing for their lives, handed over Rs 7 lakh they had got after the sale of fish; the robbers also took away four mobiles from their possession.

They trio then got into the car that was following the lorry and fled the scene. Initially, occupants of the lorry went to Dharmasthala police station to file a complaint, but they were told that since the robbery took place within the Uppinangady police station limits, they had to register a case there.

Occupants of the lorry said that the robbers had been speaking Bengaluru Kannada and Tulu.

Investigations are on.
