Gadinadu Kannadigas protest after govt orders compulsory Malayalam in schools

Kasargod: Thousands of Gadinadu Kannadigas including Kannada teachers and students from various parts of the district blocked the Kasargod Collectorate’s office on Tuesday urging that the Kerala government withdrew its order of schools implementing Malayalam as a compulsory subject in all Kerala schools including those in Kasargod as it was dominated by Kannadigas.

The protestors blocked the entry points, thus restricting employees from entering their offices. The blockade continued till 4 pm and no official was able to enter the premises. It is said that some of the protesters arrived at the spot as early as 5.30 am to restrict officials from entering the offices.

The state government had passed an ordinance last year to make Malayalam a compulsory subject in all schools of the state from the academic year of 2017-18. According to the order, Malayalam would be taught as a language from first standard and students belonging to Kannada medium schools would have to learn Malayalam as an additional language.

As per the Kannadigas in Kasargod, making Malayalam a compulsory could destroy their identity and minority status in the area.

Earlier, various Kannada organizations met concerned authorities to make necessary corrections in the ordinance and to allow Kannada medium schools to run without Malayalam as a compulsory subject. However, the Kerala government remained silent on the issue and following the silence, the protesters decided to block the Collectorate’s office.

The northern tip of Kerala, Kasargod is dominated by Tulu and Kannada speaking people. Kannada, Tulu, Konkani and Malayalam are widely spoken in Manjeshwar and Kasargod taluks, thus exhibiting linguistic harmony in the region.
