No Hopes on Sinking Barge Near Ullal Coast after Singapore Expert Team Fails to Draw Out Fuel

Ullal: Andhra Pradesh based Dharti Dredging and infrastructure Limited owned barge is very likely to sink in the sea in the Ullal coast near Mangaluru city. The barge is situated around 700 meter away from Mogaveer patna shore located near Ullal town and has started sinking in the sea since last week. Nearly, 60% portion of the barge has already sunk in the sea and tools, equipment and other materials have started floating in the sea. Some of the materials have started reaching the Ullal coast. The fisher men and local residents suspect that fuel might have leaked from the barge tank after they witness diesel smell in the coast on Thursday.

Experts from Singapore arrived on June 08 and closely observed the condition of sinking barge on a boat. The Singapore team was unable to take the fuel out of the tank as powerful huge waves could turn into a hurdle for them. Working close to the barge may turn into a threat for the lives of the experts following adverse weather conditions, condition of the barge and others. Meanwhile, permanent wall constructed in the sea to prevent sea erosion is reportedly protecting the barge from sinking.

The barge was on its mission to construct permanent walls at a spot in the sea which is around 700 meters away from Ullal seashore. The barge remained at the sea since fourth week of May 2017 even if it completed all works related to the construction of protection wall in the sea to protect Ullal coast from sea erosion. Last week, the barge met an accident and started sinking amid powerful tides, winds and rain. If fuel comes out of the barge tank then it could pollute Ullal sea and is expected destroy sea creatures threatening the livelihood of local fishermen.
