aikamba: Legal aid awareness on POCSO(Prevention of Children Sexual Offense) and  a talk on Laws and Rules of Childrenwas held at Our lady of Pompei English medium school, Kaikamba on October 21st, 2017. The purpose was to make the students, teaching and non-teaching staffs  to be aware of the different kinds of abuses that a child may face in his/her life. Ms. Adeline Stephanie Mendes, Ms. Taashi and Ms. Pemma from SDM Law College were invited as resource speakers for the talk.

The talk emphasised on how a student can protect against physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, isolation and depression. The awareness programme also included few points on Child Labour, Juvenile offence, Child marriage etc

Ms. Adeline Stephanie Mendes spoke about POCSO. She mentioned that POCSO Act intends to protect the child’s right to privacy and confidentiality through all stages of a judicial process involving the child and also spoke about primary forms of abuse which include: Physical abuse, Child neglect, Emotional abuse, and Sexual abuse. She also stressed that management of schools and colleges should have awareness sessions for teachers and parents regarding various issues with an aim to create greater sensitivity and awareness about issues, to enable them to protect children from various abuse.

Ms.Taashi highlighted the various child abuse incidents that took place and also the main reason behind it. She stressed on Child care policy in schools and colleges which include child protection committee headed by a child protection officer. Formation of these committees will help tackle the problem of child abuse at a grass root level. And also volunteers, should be selected with the support of the faculty and counsellors to anchor the child protection activities in the school. These volunteers are to be selected during a parent teacher interaction meeting, which provides the volunteers a mandate from the institution.

Ms.Pemma emphasized on various rules and laws of children. She also mentioned meaning of various acts like The Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, The Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929, Amendment to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 etc
