Malekudiyas protest in Belthangady

Mangaluru, august1 : Malekudiyas and representatives of other organisations protested in Belthangady on Friday demanding the arrest of Gopala Gowda, who has been accused of attacking a person from the Malekudiya tribe a few days ago.

The protest was jointly called by the Adivasi Hakkugala Samanvaya Samiti, the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the taluk unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Sundara Malekudiya (40), a farm worker, was allegedly attacked when he reportedly tried to prevent Mr. Gowda from clearing the jungle in the former’s land in Kataje village on July 26.

Mr. Sundara Malekudiya’s left hand was almost severed, and he lost four fingers of his right hand. Doctors at the Government Wenlock Hospital have operated to join the left hand of Sundara, who is still being treated for the injury.

Addressing protesters in Belthangady on Friday, Karnataka Advasi Hakkugala Samanvaya Samiti State co-convener S.Y. Gurushant said that the attack on Mr. Sundara was a manifestation of the oppression faced by tribal people from landholders.

Democratic Youth Federation of India State unit president Muneer Katipalla alleged that the accused Gowda, who has been at large, has illegally acquired land in the village. The State government should take action to acquire those lands.

Mr. Muneer said that if the police failed to arrest Gowda, the DYFI will be forced to carry out demonstration before the office of Superintendent of Police.

Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said that the attack on Sundara Malekudiya was serious. Efforts were being made to trace Gopala Gowda, who is reportedly at large.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Sharanappa said that the Belthangady police have so far arrested Pushpalata, the wife of Gopala Gowda. Two teams of policemen have been put on the task of tracing Gopala Gowda. Assistant Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar has been entrusted the task of investigating the case. “Efforts are on. We hope to arrest Gopala Gowda shortly,” he said.
