Foundation stone for District Central Library to be laid on May 7

Udupi: A building near the Town Hall will come up which will house the District Central Library at an estimated cost of Rs 5.18 crore.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Dr Vishal informed that the building would have three floors, apart from the basement. The building would come up on 20 cents of land at Ajjarkad and the construction would be completed in 15 to 18 months, he said.

It is learnt that the basement would be reserved for parking while the first floor would have a reading room and an administrative office. The second floor would also have a reading room and other facilities for readers. A computer lab and a centre for training for competitive examinations will also come up on the second floor. A lift service will be provided at the library.

Authorities have said that efforts were being made to digitize the library which would help readers get details regarding books online itself. It is said that the need for this building had risen as the District Library next to the Udupi City Municipal Council office was too congested.

The constriction would be taken up by the Nirmiti Kendra. Of the Rs 5.16 crore, Rs 3.18 crore was arranged by the MP and MLA Local Area Development Funds and funds through Corporate Social Responsibility.

The foundation stone will be laid at a ceremony held on May 7 in which Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar and Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake will take part.
