Seer opposes Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited expansion

Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt has opposed the expansion of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) un der com pulsory land accusation policy and without taking consent of farmers.
The seer said the MRPL has been extending its projects at different stages. In the first stage, 1,050 acres have been taken in Permude, Kuttettur, Tenka Ekkar and Delantabettu villages. The MRPL is planning to acquire a total of 3,000 acres for its various projects and the state government has approved it.
The seer said in 2008, for the third stage expansion, 251 acres was used, and in the fourth stage, for the same type of expansion, the company is demanding 1,050 acres and demanded to know why such huge tracts of land was needed.
In 2008, Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) wanted to acquire 2,035 acres for a special economic zone. After the opposition from locals, organizations and a special effort from Pejawar Seer, the government dropped the project. After so many years, the KIADB is trying to acquire the same land without taking consent of the public. Though gram panchayat members have expressed their opposition for the same, it was ignored, he said.
"Land acquisition should happen as per the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, however, the company is not doing so. This will create trouble for all," Pejawar Swamiji said.
"Altogether 4,403.43 acres have been acquired by companies. These land are fertile agricultural land and hence, such land should not be used for industries. Importance should be given for farming also . The KIADB has used only 817 acres, while the rest of 1,300 acres have not been used," he added. "The expansion requires 6.06 crore litres of water. DK is suffering a huge shortage of water. How can a government agree to give so much water," he said.
