Lucknow: The Jimmy Sheirgill-Ashutosh Rana starrer Shorgul, a movie based on the communal riots in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, will not be screened in cinema theaters across the town owing to security reasons.

Police sources in Muzaffarnagar said on Friday that the film was to be released on Friday but the cinema theater owners informed the authorities that they could face problems if the movie was screened.

“Three cinema hall owners had informed the district officials earlier that they apprehended security problems if the movie was screened....on Friday one more theater owner gave the same explanation and refused to screen the movie,” said a senior district official in Muzaffarnagar.

The officials, however, made it clear that there was no ban on the screening of the movie as was reported in a section of the media.

“The government has not banned the movie...it is entirely up to the theater owners to take a call on its screening,” the official said. Though the officials said that security would be provided to the theater owners if they made such a request, sources said that the owners had been “advised” not to screen the movie.

The officials did not want to take any chance, sources added.

Riot-accused BJP legislator Sangeet Som had sought a ban on the movie claiming that it portrayed communal violence in a distorted manner and that its screening would hurt the sentiments of the members of the Hindu community.
