Mangaluru: Traditional fishermen in the region have decided to stage a protest on July 7 near the office of the Deputy Commissioner demanding construction of an all-season fishing harbour at Kulai in the city.

Convenor of the fishermen’s organisation Ramachandra Baikpampady, told reporters here today that the proposal of constructing the all-weather fishing harbour had been pending for the last five decades.

The Centre had proposed to construct the fishing harbour at a cost of Rs 230 crore of which Rs 70 crore would be given by the New Mangalore Port Trust.

The state government had to provide environment and Coastal Regulatory Zone clearance for the Centre to go ahead with the project, he said.

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has secured the required clearances for the project in January last and had forwarded it to the state government.

However, these had not yet been forwarded to the Centre and alleged that there were efforts to scuttle the project.
