Bengaluru: The Central Pollution Control Board has issued data that has identified 15 rivers in Karnataka that are polluted due to the release of untreated waste into the rivers.

Of the 15, stretches of Malaprabha, Ghataprabha and Arkavathy rivers, the Board has categorized as ’highly polluted’ and unfit for consumption.

As per a survey conducted by the Central government in association with the Central Pollution Control Board, 302 polluted river stretches were identified across the country of which 15 are in Karnataka. The data was released by Union Minister for Forests, Environment and Climate Change, Anil Madhav Dave in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

It is learnt that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has set a two-year deadline for authorities to construct drains as well as toilets in order to prevent pollution of rivers.

The 15 rivers in the state are: Arkavathy, Bhadra, Bhima, Cauvery, Ghataprabha, Kabini, Kagina, Kali, Krishna, Lakshmantirtha, Malaprabha, Manjira, Shimsha, Tungabhadra and Tunga.

It is said that the Cauvery in Srirangapatna, Mandya was being polluted due to the immersion of ashes of the dead, dumping of animal carcasses and release of sewage water; however, plans are being made to clean the river with help from locals. Similarly, the river at Sangama and Snanada Ghatta near the ruins of Tipu Sultan’s palace was also being polluted due to the absence of toilets and washing of clothes on the river banks.

As per the data released, Maharashtra has topped the list for having 49 polluted river stretches while Assam has 28.
