Cauvery issue: B’luru shuts down; DK, Udupi unaffected


Bengaluru/Mangaluru/Udupi: The Karnataka bandh called for on Friday has affected normal life in several parts of the state. The bandh has been called by various pro-Kannada organizations as a mark of protest against the Supreme Court’s order of releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

Speaking regarding the bandh, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that government offices were likely to be affected as employees might not be able to reach work spots due to the absence of public transport. He also informed that a holiday was declared for schools and colleges.

State transport utilities, private bus and truck operators in Old Mysuru region, taxis, including Ola and Uber, Bangalore Tourist Taxi Owners’ Association have extended support for then bandh. Metro services are also likely to be hit in Bengaluru. Hotels, malls and theatres have also remained closed. Sources say that cable operators and DTH associations will also terminate services.

Stone pelting incidents have also been reported in certain areas.

In the meantime, the bandh has not affected the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi; however, there is police presence to prevent any untoward incident.
