No encroachers will be spared, says chief minister
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said strict action will be taken against all encroachers and none will be spared.
Speaking to reporters in the city, Siddaramaiah said, “Directions were issued to BBMP and other departments to be transparent in their working and not to favour anybody. I have told the officials to follow the survey maps. Current focus should be on clearing encroachments on rajakaluves which block the free flow of rainwater. Then come the buffer zones. The aim of the government is to restore the lakes, help people and ensure that there is no flooding. The government does not intend to harm anybody,” he said.
The chief minister termed encroachment as a disease. He said, “If Bangalore Development Authority encroaches, it is for the people and land comes back to the government. But if private people encroach, land is lost. The government is stern in its stand that all encroachments will be demolished.”
The aim of the government is to bring back the glory of the Garden City and City of Lakes. Improving Brand Bengaluru is the focus. Lakes, drains, stormwater drains and even nalas are encroached. The second major problem in the city is traffic congestion. To improve this, many infrastructure projects are being implemented, the chief minister said.
He said that the tenders for the construction of a steel flyover from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal were being finalised. The construction of an elevated corridor connecting east and west as well as north and south Bengaluru will soon be undertaken, he said and added that work on the peripheral ring road was also on track.
He promised that work on Metro Phase I would be completed in November and said that the work on Phase II had already commenced. Airport connectivity would be improved as the government was planning to implement Metro Phase III to the airport, Siddaramaiah said.
