Tipu Jayanti: Troops deployed; CCTV cameras, drones to monitor situation

Bengaluru/Mangaluru: Several security measures have been put in place as the Karnataka government celebrates Tipu Jayanti on Thursday. Thought there is opposition, the government has decided to go ahead with the celebrations.

Karnataka’s Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara has appealed for a peaceful celebration and cooperation from those opposing the move; however, the state government is not taking any chances and has stepped up security in several parts of the state.

The decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti was taken last year and the celebrations had resulted in violence and chaos, especially in Mangaluru and Kodagu and two people lost their lives in last year’s violence. However, despite last year’s violence, the government has decided to go ahead with the celebrations this year too.

Several troops have been stationed in Mangaluru and Kodagu. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been imposed in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. CCTV cameras and drones have been deployed within Mangaluru city limits.

Further, a bandh has been called in Kodagu on Thursday and CCTV cameras have been installed to prevent any untoward incident.
