DC orders preventive steps against avian flu

Mangaluru: The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Dr K G Jagadeesha has directed officials to step up preventive steps after cases of avian flu were reported in Kerala and Ballari in Karnataka.

Dr T Thippeswamy, Department of Animal Husbandry deputy director, said that poultry centres and chicken stalls should maintain hygiene and unnecessary movement of people at poultry farms should be curtailed. Besides this the vehicles transporting fowl birds to the poultry and chicken stalls should be disinfected before they load chicken. The vehicles that transport fowls and other products from Kerala should be disinfected at the border of Karnataka itself.

Poultry farm owners have been instructed to dispose the waste in a scientific manner, to check the spread of disease. If the chickens die unnaturally, then it should be reported to veterinary doctors immediately.

He further added that no case of bird flu was reported in Dakshina Kannada and hence there was no need for the people in the district to panic. However he advised that people should consume eggs and meat only after boiling and cooking them properly as a precautionary measure.
