Cash crunch: Post office refuses to give pension money, 70-year-old man dies


Udupi: A 70-year-old man reportedly died after several attempts to withdraw his pension from the post office went unsuccessful in the wake of the recent cash crunch problems following demonetisation.

The deceased, Mahabala Poojary, a resident of Rajeev Nagar at Palimar, was a diabetic and had been visiting the post office regularly to withdraw his pension for his medical treatment.

However the post office officials had cited insufficient change issue and did not pay him the pension dues. On Tuesday too, Poojary visited the post office, but was once again was unable to collect his pension money.

Local taluk panchayat member Dinesh Palimar on learning of Poojary’s problem was to call an ambulance and shift him to a hospital. But Poojary died in his house.

Poojary is survived by his wife Indira Poojarthi (65), who is also sick.

Meanwhile the post office denied the charges and said that there were not aware of any Mahabala Poojary. On the pension issue, they maintained that they are unable to disburse the pension owing to the cash problem which is being reported everywhere after the recent demonetisation.
