Mangalureans await as MCC‘s waste segregation drive is yet to pick up
Mangaluru: Though the Mangaluru City Corporation launched the collection of waste as dry and wet separately about two weeks ago, the initiative is yet to take shape.
It is said that there have been no efforts to collect segregated waste from any of the 60 wards in the city.
MCC had tried the same last year by collecting segregated waste in Bejai, Kodialbail and surrounding areas, but the initiative failed and was re-launched on November 1, 2016.
Mangaluru City Corporation has handed over the responsibility of collecting the waste to Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd for which vehicles painted yellow would collect dry waste on a weekly basis from the wards.
As soon as Mangaluru City Corporation launched the initiative, residents in various wards have been segregating waste but are disappointed as no efforts have been made to collect the waste.
Meanwhile, an official with the Antony Waste Handling Cell said that at present they concentrated on collecting waste from apartments and malls. He added that they would begin collecting waste from various wards in phases.
Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazir stated that it would take some time for the initiative to pick up.
