Gen Y’s penchant for social media is well known. Cautioning them about problems that over dependency and misuse of it causes was city police chief M Chandra Sekhar. Delivering a guest lecture on social awareness organized by department of commerce, Alva’s College on Thursday, he said, "Too much dependency on social media causes innumerable problems. Be cautious about what you upload in social media platforms."

Reminding students that our public profile should be limited, Chandra Sekhar said it is individuals who invite problems by posting loads of information and images in social media, inviting problems. There are many youths who have an attachment to their online lives, whether it be social media or gaming. This is unhealthy and can cause significant problem with school performance, social life and even physical health going on a downward spiral, he added.

Drug addiction is another problem that has been increasing immensely in the society and should be curbed in its roots, he said. Citing his own experience with students, an aerospace engineer who turned to be a police officer with inspirational thoughts of A PJ Abdul Kalam, Chandra Sekhar suggested students to confront problems, instead of procrastinating it. "We all have fears, may be fear of failure, fear of rejection, but we have to walk in the direction of fear," he said.

Excellence, positivity and gratitude are driving human values which brings success along with it, he opined. Answering query about cracking civil service examination, he said one should be having analytical mind to tackle the issues. He called upon students to think of IAS, IPS as real career options and work towards achieving it. Presiding over the program, Alva’s Education Foundation Trustee Vivek Alva said, students should strive hard to excel in all areas.
