13 arrested for attack on Udupi DC, officials in Kundapur


Udupi: The police have arrested 13 people for the attack on Udupi Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis and other officials during a raid to track down illegal sand mining in Kundapur late on Sunday night.

The accused have been booked under attempted murder, obstructing government employees from discharging duties and other charges. The Deputy Commissioner, in her complaint claimed that a group of people who were involved in illegal sand mining near Kandluru Bridge, Kundapur attempted to murder her and other officials during the raid.

While six accused were arrested from Halnad village, the others were nabbed from Kandlur.

It is said that the officials first conducted a raid at Halnad and then went to Kandlur, but the miners in Kandlur had received information regarding the raid at Halnad and were prepared to attack the officials.

Meanwhile, Bhaskara, a man involved in sand mining was admitted to a hospital in Kundapur and he alleged that he was injured due to the atrocities on part of the officials who arrived for the raid. This counter incident alleged on the issue might change the course of the entire case.

Various organizations including the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Udupi Lorry Owners’ Association, Sarva Sanghatenagala Maralu Horata Samiti and others have extended their support to the Deputy Commissioner in the incident. They opined that such incidents have been taking place in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts though people there were known for education, discipline and social service.
