MCC Team to Visit Desalination Plant in Chennai Next Month

Mangaluru: An eight member team from Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will visit Chennai in the first week of May 2017 as part of their efforts to establish a desalination plant in the coastal area of the city to process and utilise sea water for drinking purpose.

Speaking to the media persons in the city on Thursday, chief whip of the government in Karnataka legislative council Ivan D’Souza said, the state government decided to establish a desalination plant in the city at a cost of Rs 871 crore to process the sea water and meet rising demand for drinking water. As per the directions from the state government, a team including MCC Mayor, 3 corporators and other concerned authorities will visit desalination plant located at Minjur in Chennai.

MCC superintendent engineer Srinivas said, "1, 000 liter sweet water could be processed at a cost of Rs 6 to Rs 8 whereas 1,000 liter salt water could be processed at cost Rs 35 to Rs 40." Minjur desalination plant in Chennai is the biggest salt water processing plant in India and has the capacity to process 100 million liter sea water on daily basis. The plant is functioning from 2010 on an area of 60 acre land.
