Mangaluru: The union government has decided to develop a national highway between Mangaluru –Bengaluru meeting global standards including separate lanes for heavy, light vehicles, two wheeler and others. Thus eight hour long drive between Mangaluru and Bengaluru is expected to be reduced to four hour journey.

According to the proposal, the new speed highway won’t have frequent U-turns or entry into the highway directly from local roads. The vehicles transporting essential goods, petrol, and others will have separate lanes. Union government has already drawn sketches for this ambitious plan under ’Bharatmala’ project initiated. According to the project being implemented in the country, around 20,000 km long roads will be developed all over India in the first phase at a cost of Rs 3.8 lakh crore and the project is expected to be completed within five years.

According to the Bharatmala project, the existing roads will be upgraded with a minimum of four lanes on each side. In addition, improved service roads will support the highways. With an objective to connect the ports with commercial hubs of the country, four highways including, Mangaluru- Bengaluru, Mumbai-Kolkata, Ludhiana-Kandla and Porbandar-Silchar will be developed as high speed highways under ’Bharatmala’.
