Tamil Nadu police have registered cases against eight persons, who allegedly assaulted a student in IIT-Madras for participating in a "beef feast" in the campus on Sunday.

R Sooraj, a PhD scholar in IIT-M, sustained serious injury in his right eye during the attack. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the city.

Police sources said that all the accused were booked under several sections of IPC including punishment for creating violence, charges for wrongful restraint, for causing hurt and criminal intimidation. However, no arrest have been made so far.

Amid mounting protest across the country to condemn the Union Government’s decision to ban the sale of cows and buffaloes for slaughter, a group of students in IIT-M allegedly organised a beef fest in the campus on last Sunday to oppose Centre’s move on cattle trade.

The feast, which was attended by about 50 students on Sunday night, created controversy with BJP Tamil Nadu unit demanded the suspension of Dean of the IIT-M.

Meanwhile, more than 50 students from the various organisation were arrested when they tried to stage a protest demonstration near IIT-M campus demanding immediate arrest of the persons, who attacked the PhD student.
