Lakhs converge to take part in Maratha rally

Lakhs of people belonging to the politically-strong Maratha community had converged in Mumbai for the much-awaited grand rally demanding reservations in jobs and education, justice for the girl of the community who was raped and brutalized at Kopardi in Ahmednagar district last year, besides seeking amendments in the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

At 11 AM, the Maratha Kranti Morcha would formally start marching from the Ranibaug zoo in Byculla, take the JJ Flyover and end at Azad Maidan. Thereafter, a delegation would go to Vidhan Bhavan complex at Nariman Point and meet Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Political parties, cutting across ideologies and party lines, had supported the demand of the Maratha community for reservation in jobs and education, the No. 1 demand. The rally is expected to bring the island city of Mumbai to a standstill as it is going to be huge and result in a traffic mess. Schools and junior colleges from Dadar to south Mumbai had been given off.

At the rally, commoners would rub shoulders with politicians, celebrities and royals who too would walk down and press for the charter of demands.

So far 57 Maratha Kranti Morchas have been held across the state, however, this is the first time that they are holding in Mumbai and literally knocking the doors of powers.

With banners of ’Chalo Mumbai...Chalo Mumbai...Ek Maratha, Lakh Maratha’ - people are being welcomed as they started entering in Mumbai on Tuesday evening. They are coming here by trains, buses and four-wheelers.

The Mumbai police and BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation had made necessary arrangements for the rally including mobile toilets and medical camps. Overnight they stayed at various camps in Navi Mumbai and Thane where community kitchens were organised. In the morning breakfast and tea was served.

The Mumbai traffic department had created several parking lots across the city and traffic movement was being regulated.
