Toll in Bhendi Bazaar building crash reaches 33


Officials of Mumbai Fire Brigade and NDRF, who continued the rescue and relief operations said on Friday morning that so far 33 bodies have been recovered.

They fear that 10 to 15 more persons are feared trapped in the debris of the 6-storeyed building that collapsed like a pack of cards on Thursday.

Four of those admitted in the Sir JJ Hospital are said to be serious. "The rescue operations will continue till the debris is cleared and the last man is accounted for," a senior Mumbai civic official said.

The building - located off the Pakmodia Street near Sir JJ Hospital in south Mumbai - was 117-years old and was to undergo redevelopment by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust. It had all necessary permissions foment agencies like BMC and MHADA.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a probe headed be an officer of the rank of additional chief secretary which will go into the details of the crash and why redevelopment was not undertaken despite all the permissions and nod for demolition.
This is the third building collapse in Mumbai this monsoon.
