Balapore Laddu fetches Rs 15.60 lakh in auction, immersion peaceful in Hyd

The Balapore Laddu that adored the hand of lord Ganesh idol fetched Rs 15.60 lakh this year breaking the earlier record of Rs 14.65 lakh. Mr. Nagam Tirupathi Reddy who was among the 25 very enthusiastic bidders received the Laddu from the Pandal committee after fierce but friendly bidding process. “It is believed that the laddu brings fame and fortune. Whatever I have given to Balapore Ganesh returns to me in leaps and bounds,” Reddy said after winning the bid.

The process of auctioning Laddu has begun in 1980 in Balapore. The Balapore Ganesh even though small in size will be the first Ganesh idol to move in the procession of Ganesh utsav committee. In later years even outsiders also started participating in the bid. Devotees from Andhra, Rayalaseema and even Gujarat used to participate in auctioning. However they have to register their names with the committee ahead of the day of the auction. The amount is generally spent on social service work and a part covers expenditure incurred on organizing the festival.

The Laddu is made with pure ghee and spices is covered with silver foil so that it will stay fresh even after nine days at the pandal.

Immersion Peaceful

Meanwhile, the immersion of Ganesh idols from all nook and corners of Hyderabad city has been peaceful without any major incidents. With the advice of the police department the 58 feet Khairatabad Ganesh was the first to lead this year. It took under 6 hours for the tallest Ganesha to reach Hussainsagar which is less than three kilometers in distance. Heavy cranes, pulleys and specialized equipment were pressed into service to achieve a near perfect immersion.

Devotees participated in immersion despite heavy rains in Hyderabad and Rangareddy from past three days. While small and medium sized idols were immersed in local tanks and water bodies the heavy ones queued up for Hussainsagar.

With the help of drones and CC cameras, the Hyderabad police have given adequate protection for the immersion. The south zone police have taken 200 trouble makers into preventive custody on the old city.
