’Could’ve handled Aus series differently’
With the dust having settled on the bitterly-fought India-Australia Test series and with a lot of time to reflect on the events that took place during the course of hosts’ 2-1 win, Virat Kohli felt he could perhaps have handled things differently.
“The last series I think, during the course of such a big series, such a big event, you tend to go into a zone where sometimes, when you later sit back and think, you could have done things differently or handled yourself differently,” Kohli said on Thursday in his first interaction with the media after the final Test in Dharamsala.
“But in the larger picture, you understand what is important for the team. I learnt a lot from that phase. I learnt a lot as a captain, as an individual and even as a person,” said Kohli.
Kohli is returning to cricketing action after a lengthy lay-off and the focus once again is on him. The 28-year-old said he has got used to the immense attention around him and he is ready to handle it in a better way than he has in the past.
“I can’t control the focus (on me) bit. I always try and focus on my game. What the cameras and the TV packages do is not in my control. So I wouldn’t say I will be disappointed if the attention is on me again because I am used to it by now. But I will definitely handle it better than I have in some instances in the past. Not necessarily taking everything upon me or taking too much of a load on myself and letting things go. So the last series has been a massive learning experience,” he offered.
The right-handed batsman said the time away from the game gave him the opportunity to introspect on certain aspects of his game. “The last few weeks have been irritating as far as going on to the field is concerned but (I had) a lot of time to introspect and understand what needs to be done going forward (and that) makes me feel better. It makes me stronger and I know how to handle it better,” he said.
