Vijender oozes confidence

It has been a short but rewarding stint for Vijender Singh in professional boxing. The Haryana pugilist is clear he will adopt a “slow and steady” approach on the pro circuit as he confidently gears up to face WBO Oriental super middleweight champion Zulpikar Maimaitiali of China in Mumbai on Saturday.

The 31-year-old, who has had seven knockouts out of his eight fights, promises a swift wrap against Zulpikar at “Battleground Asia’. The fight night will feature the double title fight between Vijender, the current WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight champion, and China’s No 1 boxer.

“I will do my 100 per cent for another knock-out and to finish the bout as early as possible. Anyways, Chinese materials don’t last long!,” Vijender quipped to spark peels of laughter during an event where he where he was named the brand ambassador of Platinum Heavy Duty Cement.

The fact Zulpikar is nine years younger didn’t worry Vijender. He insisted age was not a factor in professional boxing. "I don’t think age matters. Look at Floyd Mayweather Jr, he is 40 and still fighting. It’s all about experience. I still feel I am 20," he said.

Asked how much he has studied his opponent, Vijender said: "I searched his profile in Wikipedia but didn’t get any significant results. I saw his fight on TV just once and after that put my trainer (Lee Beard) on the duty to observe his videos and train me accordingly."

“Currently my focus on weight control. I am not having hard core sessions but revising my best things.”

Vijender, who had earlier terminated his contract with the UK-based Queensberry Promotions, is working with them only as a freelancer and willing to work with any promoter. “Our doors are open for any body, for all promoters all over the world. Queensberry is still with us. It is not about contract but about how many fights they are getting for me.”

Vijender, who won bronze in 2008 Olympics, was clear his next fight would take place abroad.
