Prakash, Sunil overwhelmed


Prakash, the Bengaluru shooter, who nailed a silver in the 10M Air Pistol event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, told DH that the award was a result of his sustained hard work. 

“I have come close to receiving this prestigious award a couple of times in the past. It’s all about working hard. I wish to gracefully accept the award and set bigger goals. I believe if you are dedicated to the sport, awards and accolades follow automatically,” he said.

The 41-year-old, who overcame Bell’s Palsy, a paralytic attack in the prime of his career, said that he has set his eyes on the next Olympic Games. 

“I have started training under Kim Seonil, the Korean coach and the preparations for Olympics have already begun. I want to represent my country and I know I have to remain consistent in my performances,” he offered. 

Sunil, the veteran striker in the Indian hockey side, thanked Hockey India and his team for all the support. “It is nice to know that the Hockey India feels I deserve to receive this award. It is a proud moment for me and I don’t know how to express it in words. It could not have been possible without the support of my team-mates and staff,” he said. 

The 28-year-old has represented India in more than 150 matches and is one of the main strikers in the side. Sunil confessed that he had no regrets in not being in contention for the award in the last couple of years. “I don’t have any regrets. My seniors were given the award and I feel they deserved it.” 

Veteran Sardar Singh was recommended the for the Khel Ratna. “All the players are happy for Sardar and the mood in the camp is great, ” he added.
