Gujarat end day one on top

Gujarat Cricket Association produced a measured batting performance to take the day one honours against Andhra Cricket Association in the final of the KSCA Dr (Capt) Thimmappiah Memorial cricket tournament here at the Chinnaswamy stadium on Tuesday.

Gujarat, unchanged from the semifinal, won the toss and elected to bat first on a surface that offered slight movement for the pacers. Kathan Patel (82 batting, 201b, 9x4) and Bharghav Merai (72, 100b, 9x4) dug in to score half-centuries as Gujarat reached 234 for three before bad light stopped play 30 minutes prior the scheduled close time.

Overnight rain resulted in a half-hour delay to start of play and Gujarat openers Samit Gohel and Kathan began cautiously.

Gohel, who rose to limelight in last season’s Ranji Trophy with his ability to essay long innings, was the key wicket for Andhra. The right-hander looked set for a big knock before a mix up saw him depart at 39.

Joining forces at 188/2, Kathan and Merai found the going smooth and the duo forged an alliance of 112 (180 balls). Merai, who had amassed 253 runs from four games coming into the title clash, was the aggressor of the two. The 25-year-old right-hander slammed nine fours and appeared well set but Andhra heaved a sigh of relief when Karthik Raman removed him at the fag end of the second session.

Andhra dried up the runs to slightly pull things back in the final session and it was Karthik again who got the breakthrough when he scalped Gujarat skipper Manpreet Juneja.

The right-hander struggled to rotate strike and lived dangerously in the middle.

In a bid to break the shackles, Juneja attempted a pull but miscued it to hand a simple catch to Jyothi Sai Krishna at mid-wicket.

Left-hander Rujul Bhatt walked in to join hands with Kathan and the duo saw of a few anxious moments to deny Andhra any further wicket.
