Pilikula - Wayanad varsity tie up - to manage animals’ health

The Pilikula Biological Park have made a proposed agreement with Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Wayanad, for better control on the health management of animals in the park and also for the study of native animals in the Western Ghats.

The university’s experts on wildlife would help in health management of animals and birds, according to the park’s director H.J. Bhandary.
With an agreement with the university in place, the services of experts and students could be utilized as and when required towards medical treatment.
The director said that once a detailed plan is worked out there will be Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the university to put this plan into effect. He said the agreement would also allow the students to conduct research on the animals in the Western Ghats.


Animal exchange programme

The director said that with the animal exchange program amongst the various animal zoo’ in the country efforts were made to get an Asiatic lion to the park from the Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden, Junagadh, Gujarat.

In addition, there was also a possibility of getting a o get a male lion and some birds from Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, Tamil Nadu, in exchange for a King Cobra from Pilikula.

He said a project proposal to open a leopard rescue centre at Pilikula was pending with the State government.

As the park was getting cases of injured leopards that fell into traps laid by villagers for wild boars, the park had felt the need to open a dedicated centre with at least six rooms to treat the injured beasts. If the animals recovered fast they would be let back into forests. The park is seeking an assistance of Rs. 1 crore for the project for a period of five years.
