CM announces expert committee to ensure safe campuses, and safety for women

MANGALURU, Nov 3: State government will adopt two-pronged strategy to ensure that educational campuses in Karnataka are safe enough. While chief minister Siddaramaiah announced the setting up of task force to monitor schools at Rajyotsava celebrations in Bengaluru on Saturday, on Sunday he said an expert committee has been set up under MLC M C Nanaiah to submit its recommendations of steps needed to ensure there is no repeat of such incidents.

Interacting with media at Mangaluru International Airport at Kenjar near here, CM said the task force announced on Saturday will be constituted in a day or two. The task force will hold regular meetings with (school) managements and parents. Such interactions - be it in private or government schools will ensure that managements are on the alert at all times and will take necessary steps to ensure that small children are not put in harm’s way.

In addition, the Nanaiah led committee will go in to the issue of children’s safety on school campuses, look in to issues of recurrent sexual assaults and atrocities on women and give its recommendations to the government. These recommendations could be in the form of any amendments that need to be carried out to law or any other systemic changes that are needed to ensure that women in general and children in particular are not vulnerable.

Opining that the move by the government to include sexual predators under the Goonda Act will certainly act as a deterrent, Siddaramaiah said with amendments to section 376 of Indian Penal Code, people who commit such misdemeanours even for the first time as against a repeat offence earlier, will now be liable to be booked under the said Act. A person so charged under the above Act can be detained without bail for one year, CM said.
